COUNTY CROWN: Graham Smith.

Spalding Indoor Bowls Club trio earn Midlands final coup

Three Spalding Bowls Club players attended the Midlands Regional Finals of the EIBA School of Excellence at Melton Mowbray.

Nathan Puttrell, Jonathan Field and Jamie Goodliff qualified from the local event in January, playing three games to the ‘sets’ format which was followed by a skills test in the afternoon.

Points were awarded for the various events with Nathan finishing ninth, Jonathan 13th and Jamie 14th in a field which included 13 other players from clubs across the area.

The club would like to congratulate all three on a great performance both on the day and for reaching the final stages – which is a fantastic achievement.

  • Maurice Elding and Graham Smith have won county singles titles.

Elding beat Stamford’s Martyn Dolby by 14 shots to 12 in the over-60s while Smith beat Jonathan West 5-3, 9-1 to take the sets singles title.

It was mixed fortunes for Spalding as Andy Dunham, Jordan Philpott and Mathew Orrey lost the triples 4-17 to J West.

Matt Whyers, Graham Smith, Martin Spencer and Mathew Orrey lost to P Roberts 14-16 in the fours.

  • The over-60s County League team played their last game of the season at home to a very strong team from Skegness A.

Even though Spalding hung on for a few ends it was clear they were up against a superior side.

Some of the home team rinks raised their game and came back at the opposition but this was not happening on all rinks.

The deficit remained throughout, finishing with the home team losing by 75 shots to 109.

The consolation was that Spalding won on two rinks to pick up four points leaving Skegness with 14 points to their credit.

The Spalding winning rink was Derek Overton, Brian Skelton, Pat Fillbrook and skip Graham Wright. Captain was Pat Fillbrook.
