Spalding Indoor Bowls Club toast their top talents after ten earn England calls

Spalding Indoor Bowls Club are celebrating the outstanding achievement of having TEN international players following recent success at the trials.

Amazingly, every player from the Castle Sports Complex-based club that attended their trial has been selected for the England squad in their respective groups.

Jordan Philpott has kept his place in the men’s under-25 team, while Ruby Hill and Chelsea Tomlin have retained their places in the ladies’ under-25 team – with Tomlin being given the enormous honour of captaining the side.

Meanwhile, Matt Whyers and Graham Smith have retained their places in the men’s senior team, with Martin Spencer joining them after being recalled to the top squad.

Spalding’s Mathew Orrey is also in the squad and will travel as reserve.

However, it’s in the ladies’ senior side where Spalding are best-represented.

Annie Dunham and Rebecca Simpson retained their places and are joined by Tomlin, Hill and Louise Catchpole.

A Spalding IBC statement read: “It’s an outstanding achievement by all and we wish them all good luck in Wales and Ireland next year.”

In the ladies’ competition, they comfortably beat Barwell by 89 shots to 48.

The men also progressed as they beat Lincoln by 76 shots to 50.

Both teams play their last 16 matches on January 7, where the ladies face Lincoln and the men play Barwell.

In the mixed competition, Spalding lost out to Lincoln by 69 shots to 60.

  • Spalding IBC’s under-18 A team played their first competitive junior county league game of the season at Sutton St James on Saturday, December 3.

Finding it difficult to come to terms with the much heavier green, the young team eventually lost 21-13.

The team was Aaron and Danielle Wild, Emily Day and Aaron Barnes.
