ENGLAND CALL: Ruby Hill is one of the Spalding IBC members to bag an international trial.

Spalding Indoor Bowls Club members boosted by spree of international trials

Spalding Indoor Bowls Club will be extremely well represented at various international trials in the next few weeks.

In addition to Ruby Hill’s success at under-18 level, Lucy Cooke, Chelsea Tomlin and Hill herself have trials for the under-25 team on December 12.

Jordan Philpott and Ashley Caress have been invited for under-25 trials on November 22, with Graham Smith, Matt Whyers and Martin Spencer attending the senior men’s trial on December 6.

Rounding off an excellent year so far are Annie Dunham, Rebecca Simpson and Chelsea Tomlin, who have received senior ladies’ trials on December 13.

  • Spalding IBC clinched a nail-biting win in the national knockout Denny Cup in a match played home and away against Stamford on Saturday.

Spalding started slowly and fell behind Stamford by the halfway stage.

However, from 13 ends Spalding found their form, particularly at home, and headed into the last few ends a couple of shots to the good.

With just two ends left to play, the scores were level – but a double from Martin Spencer at Stamford left the home rink skipped by Matt Whyers needing to keep things close.

They were able to do just that, losing a single shot to take the match.

  • Rink scores: Home – Graham Smith 26 Roger Martin 17; Matt Whyers 29 Keith Rippin 13.

Away – Martin Spencer 15 Pete Edwards 19; Scott Dunham 5 Martyn Dolby 25.

That made the overall score 75-74 to Spalding, who progress to face another Lincolnshire rival, Grantham, on November 29.

  • Spalding IBC’s ladies enjoyed a derby win as they progressed in their first round match of the Yetton Trophy.

The Spalding women won all four rinks against Stamford to triumph by 100 shots to 87.

  • Spalding IBC’s mixed national team beat Boston on by 74 shots to 57 in the Egham Trophy.

Away from home, rinks skipped by Annie and Scott Dunham kept it tight, keeping to a narrow deficit.

That proved to be good enough as, at home, Graham Smith and Martin Spencer’s sets both recorded 12-shot winning margins.
