Spalding Golf Club’s teen ace Tilly tops strong field to reach grand final with nett 65

Talented Spalding teenager Tilly Garfoot produced a fabulous round of six under par to win the England Golf Grand Medal Midlands North Qualifier at Penn GC.

Garfoot, who is also a Lincolnshire county girls’ player, topped a list of ten regional golfers who will be going into the grand final at Frilford Heath in Oxfordshire on August 13.

Having got off to a bad start in Staffordshire with a nine on the first hole, she held her nerve like an experienced professional to return a nett 65 playing off 23 handicap.

The scale of Garfoot’s achievement is illustrated by the fact that other qualifiers included senior international golfers.

Prior to that, Garfoot became girls’ under-14 champion at the Lincolnshire county event held at Spalding’s Surfleet course earlier in the month.

The ever-increasing strength of the club’s junior section came to the fore, with Lois Williamson being crowned under-18 champion, Tilly Kedzlie being both the county champion overall and under-16 champion and Eden Inglis being voted most improved youngster.

In the boys’ section Hugo Kedzlie was also the overall winner.

  • Spalding’s coveted Burton Cup was won by 19- handicapper Ben Bettinson with an amazing score of 47 points – which equated to no less than 11 under par.

He beat his nearest rivals Keith Smith and Wayne Flowers by six points, with Shawn Huggins a point further back in fourth.

Tommy Hull and Nige Cook completed the under par players with 37 points each, with all earning a handicap reductions for their efforts.

  • Spalding’s men’s first team belied their poor start in the league by winning through to the quarter-finals of the Elsham Trophy.

They beat Canwick Park away from home, with captain Andy Grimwood and Simon Richardson scoring a decisive 3up victory.

A tricky tie away at Seacroft awaits in the last eight.

They were unable to carry this momentum forward to the league, however, enduring a narrow 4-2 loss away to Stoke Rochford.

The winning pairs for Spalding were Lloyd Chatham and Dan Hines and Ollie Mitchell and Harry Hunt.

  • Captain David Tasker’s Spalding mixed team were also defeated away at Belton Park, losing 4.5 – 3.5.

Winning pairs for Spalding were Neil West and Jenny Wilson, Ray Harrison and Jackie Clare, with Tasker and Paula Brown, Laurie Haley and Di West and Martin Ward and Lesley Williams all

halving their matches.

  • Spalding’s third team continued their good run of form with two notable wins, away at Sleaford and at a 5.5-0.5 home victory against a strong Boston side.
