IMPRESSIVE START: Mark Gray top scored with a 73 break on the season's opening night.

Snooker round-up: Exciting title race as Division One’s top two shine again

A 67 close and break of 46 from Mark Gray (O105) was the highlight as Spalding and District Snooker League Division One leaders Bourne SC A continued their winning ways.

They beat Pyramid B 5-1 with Gray sandwiched between two black ball wins from Ian Gibson (R7) and Oliver Player (O28) while Max Ayliff (O14) had a break of 25 in his frame.

Services E cemented their place as Bourne’s main title challenge with a 6-0 victory over Holbeach D. Craig Fitter (O14) gave them a fine start building breaks of 27 and 21 to take the first frame 83-37 over Neil Grant (R7).

The other games were much closer but it was the home team who came out on top in all to go within a point of Bourne SC A and extend their lead over third placed Pyramid A to ten points.

They held off a comeback from Tulips B to win 4-2. Dean Cole (R7)’s win on the blackball and Victor Rouse (R14) put Pyramid 2-0 ahead but Ady Sibley (O21) and Darren Woodberry (O3) took it to a decider. Mick Twell (R7) won that for Pyramid, 68-27 over Mark Wilkinson (O14).

Sutton A are off the Division One basement after five breaks of over 20 saw them to a 4-2 win over Holbeach C.

Sean Swinburn’s break of 37 in the first frame still wasn’t enough to see him beat Damo Lewis (Scr) but Sutton went on to win. The highest of the breaks was a 40 from Matt Smith (O35) in the deciding frame win (81-48) over Lee Pickett (O21).

Donington C triumphed at Boundary A in a thriller that involved two black ball games and a final frame decider.

Lee Hempsall (O7) provided a 25 close to win the opening frame on the black against Pete King (Scr).

Ben Wrigglesworth (O21) then doubled Donington’s lead, but Boundary hit back through John Tidswell (O21) and Jim McGhee (R7) the latter taking it to a deciding frame on the black.

Mat Turner (O21) edged out Stewart Lilley (Scr) in the keenly-fought decider 58-47.

Consti F beat Boundary B 4-2 with Robert Adams (O14) leading the way with a 25 break while Nic Savic produced breaks of 21 and 25 as Tulips A beat Consti B 5-1.

With Division Two leaders Services C without a game, second placed Donington A failed to capitalise as they lost 4-2 to Whittlesey C on the black in the final frame. Steve Jenkins (O21) and Lol

Hailstone (R14) won frames for Whittlesey as the game went to the decider. Malc Bruce (O14) held his nerve on the back during that to beat Jim Thompson (O7) 52-39.

Boundary C’s hopes of the challenging for the title suffered a blow as they lost 5-1 at Services A.

Pyramid C and Holbeach B saw Pyramid twice come from behind to win an exciting match up.

Neil Harvey (O14) potted the black to beat Tony Strickson (R14) in the opening frame to give Holbeach the lead, but Malc Croft (Scr) hit straight back.

Zac Rowlett (O14) regained Holbeach’s lead and Pyramid needed a win on the black by Jeremy Radford (Scr) against Martin Davis (O49) to take the game to a deciding frame.

That led to a comparatively straightforward win for Pyramid C’s Alan Jackson (O14) over Phil Coaten (014) 68-22. Breaks of 36 from Jack Chilvers and 25 from Adam Braybrook helped Services F to a 5-1 win over Pyramid D for whom Marcus Hamilton had a 31 break.

Consti G beat Long Sutton B 4-2 with John Barnes (O7) and Nigel West (R7) both winning black ball games to seal the win.

Gosberton A enjoyed a 4-2 win over the division’s basement side Donington B.

There was a shock at the top of Division Three as leaders Crowland C lost for just the fourth time this season, 4-2 to Consti D.

The leaders fought back from two frames down to take the game to a decider, but John Cooper (58) held his nerve to beat Jeff Roberts (R14) to seal the win. Martin Perkins (O21) and Tom Digby (Scr) had earlier picked up frame wins for Consti D.

Consti I closed the gap on the leaders to five points with a 4-2 win over Consti A, Stewart Wells (R21), Pete Stokes (R7) and David Twelves (R17) with frame wins.

Consti C beat Consti E 4-2 to leapfrog their opponents into third.

Gosberton C flew off the bottom of the table with a 6-0 demolition of Pyramid E, Malc Dennis rounding the night off by potting the final black for a win over Neil McLean (O7).

Services D enjoyed a whitewash over Bourne SC B. Mark Howlett (O14) sealed the team’s victory in a black ball game over Darren Crosby (O35) after frame wins for Karen Howlett (R21), Mike Small (R7), Karen Howlett (R21) and Tanya Peel (Scr).

The previously second from bottom Consti J also won, a 4-2 victory at Gosberton B with Nick Keeble (O35) on the black, Les Andrew (O7) and Stuart Davies (O7) with frame wins.
