Route gets a spring clean

A revamped path linking Spalding’s town centre and Johnson Hospital has been officially opened.

The Daffodil Route has been spruced up thanks to £85,000 of Section 106 money secured from Spalding Power Station.

The work carried out by CG Godfrey of West Pinchbeck, included the laying of a 850m-long, 2.4m-wide near maintenance-free surface, as well as the cutting back of trees.

Coun Rodney Grocock said more bulb and flower planting is planned for next year.

“Before the track was dark, muddy and overgrown,” he continued. “People were worried about using the route.

“Now it looks fantastic and it’s great to see so many people using it.”

Spalding cycling group PEDALS say its members first suggested the route in the 1980s after the former railway was closed in the previous decade.

Speaking at the opening, its chairman David Jones said that while more work was needed on the route ‘to bed it in’ both he and group members were delighted it had been upgraded.

“We know the district council is now putting pressure on the county council to improve other areas near the hospital.

“The district council have done a very good job with the resources available to them.”
