Porter relaxed on search for next permanent Spalding United boss with Porfirio impressing

Spalding United CEO Leigh Porter admits that the club are in no rush to make a definitive decision on who will be the next permanent manager.

Caretaker boss Bruno Porfirio has taken four points from two games since stepping up to the Tulips hot-seat in the wake of Gaby Zakuani’s departure two weeks ago.

Porter feels that Porfirio has the club’s “best interests at heart” and is pleased by the job he is doing, but revealed that Spalding have received numerous applications for the position and will review the situation on a game-by-game basis.

Having drawn 1-1 with Bedworth United last weekend, it’s a difficult trip to Pitching In NPL Midlands Division high-flyers Chasetown next for the Tulips on Saturday (3pm).

Porter is adamant that the club want to be in and around the play-off mix at the business end of the season and, with Spalding ten points off fifth place at present, it’s important they get something in Staffordshire.

“What happened with Gaby was best for both parties,” said Porter. “Things happened very quickly and we’ve not had a lot of time to figure out what happens next.

“Bruno has stepped up very well and I know that he has the club’s best interests at heart.

“He wants to be involved with the club moving forward whatever happens next.

“As things stand, he’s doing a good job and has picked up four points from his two games.

“We talk regularly and, I know it’s a bit of cliché, we’re taking each day and game as it comes really.

“The chief aim we share is that we want to be improving as a club all of the time. We drew last week, so we’ll be looking to win the next one at Chasetown.

“Our ambition since we took over running the club is to be playing for something come the end of the season.

“If you look at Spalding’s recent history, the club hasn’t been fighting for promotion for a few years.

“We want to be looking up the table and battling for the play-offs, that hasn’t changed since Gaby left the club.

“With that kind of aim, you’re always going to attract people and we have had a few people getting in touch about being our new manager.

“What I’ll say is that we’ve spoken to everyone who has been in touch and told them that we’re going to take our time before deciding what to do next.

“We’ve progressed as a club over the next year and everything here is positive.”

Spalding have won three of their eight away games so far this season, but go into the clash in eighth place.

Second-placed Chasetown are 12 points better off and are four points behind leaders Ilkeston with a game in hand.

They have only lost once at home in the league all season.
