New home for council tenant

An elderly tenant has been able to move into a new property after her current home became unsuitable.

South Holland District Council’s Housing team pulled out all the stops for their tenant, identifying, preparing and helping her to move into a new property in the space of just four days after it became clear she would no longer be able to remain in her old flat due to mobility issues.

The tenant, aged 76, had previously lived in a first floor flat in Spalding, until a hospitalisation earlier this month left her unable to return home due to issues with accessing the property.

The council’s housing team responded quickly, working with the tenant’s family to identify a suitable available one-bed bungalow in the town, and carrying out the necessary clearance, safety checks and other works to get it ready to be moved into as quickly as possible.

As a result the tenant, who was facing having to remain in hospital despite being otherwise fit for discharge, was able to be in a new and more suitable home within just days of making the council aware of her issue.

Councillor Christine Lawton, South Holland District Council portfolio holder for housing and health, said: “Examples like this really show what make me so proud of the tireless work our housing team do in the district.

“The willingness to go above and beyond the usual roles and responsibilities to make a real tangible difference to an individual’s life may not always be visible in annual statistics and reports, but is reflective of the team’s dedication to every tenant and importance as a landlord of choice across South Holland.

“Hospital is never a nice place to be, but especially in current circumstances it was important to allow someone to feel safe in their own house, and to ensure that beds and resources in hospitals are available to those who need them most. I wish her all the best in her new home.”
