Mixed emotions for player/boss Cawthorn after Long Sutton battle back for point in thriller

Two goals in the last ten minutes earned Long Sutton Athletic a thrilling 4-4 draw with Wittering in ChromaSport PDFL Division One on Saturday.

Having fallen behind at London Road, the Magpies levelled when player/boss Matt Cawthorn bagged before the break.

Wittering hit back to go 2-1 ahead early in the second period, only for Adam Fitch to level for Sutton once again.

However, it looked like game over when the visitors raced 4-2 up. That was, until Tommy Treacher fired a classy 18-yard volley into the top corner and Jonny Allen smashed home a last-gasp leveller after a mazy run.

Cawthorn said: “Saturday was a game I’d like to forget in one way, but on the other hand it was great spirit and determination from the lads.

“I’m happy with a point but we easily could have had three. If we cut out the mistakes we could be flying in this league. We have goals in this side.

“A mention should go to Ryan Brothwell, it was a close call between him and Jonny Allen for man of the match. But ‘Broth’ did extremely well in the centre of the park.”

Sutton visit Langtoft United Reserves on Saturday (2pm), then face an away date at Wisbech Town Reserves the following Wednesday night (7.30pm).

Sutton: Congreve, Wayman, R Ward, Fitch, M Ward, Gomes, N Treacher, Brothwell, T Treacher, Cawthorn, Allen. Subs: Lawrence, Garner, Williamson.
