Men’s 1st come out on top in local derby

LSHC Mens’ 1st 4
Wisbech 1st 2

Sutton started well with a couple of early chance but nothing of note to cause Wisbech any serious threat.
The away side had their own chances too but James Cliff was strong between the sticks along with his defence of Dan Oldfield, Josh Fyson, Michael Donaghy and Luke Proctor.
About halfway into the half the deadlock was broken and Wisbech opened the scoring, soon adding a second.
A few more chances would pass in the half alongside Jimmy Harrison receiving his marching orders.
Sutton set up slightly differently in the second half with Josh Baker on the left, Frazer Watt through the centre and Daniel Batten on the right.
It seemed to work well as the home side had success driving forward and won themselves a short not long into the half.
Fyson smashed home the rebound to get the home side on the score board.
Not long later, great work from the likes of Nick Ellis, Sam Gray and Batten meant Watt had a smashing shot towards goal to equalise.
The midfield were starting to dominate their battles and cause Wisbech issues.
Harrison, McKenzie East, Gray and Dominic Ibrahim were vital.
Another foray forward resulted in a rebound falling to Baker to volley home on his backhand sending the home side storming into the lead.
Five minutes later, another short, another rebound, Baker finished perfectly on the back foot into the top right hand corner.
A remarkable comeback from the greens in the second half which created a proper spectacle for the neutral.

LSHC Men’s 2nd 4
Cambridge City 5th 0

Sutton went into this game on the back of a relatively slow start back after Christmas, but still top of the table and rearing to go.
With Josh Norey going back up north, and Si Clarke recovering, the 2nd team welcomed back to the fold Matt Holmes and James Collingwood-Smith.
From the off Sutton stamped their authority on the game.
Luke Jackson and Collingwood-Smith worked well down the wings, and Dan Plant ran the show from the midfield by linking up with Alex Canham and Eddie Hales, the latter of which ran off the defender before cutting the ball back to Plant who fired home to open the scoring about six minutes into the game.
Then five minutes later, good link-up play from Jackson and Canham led to the ball being fired into Plant in the D, and slotted home to double the lead.
With a comfortable cushion, the pace dropped slightly to conserve legs, allowing a scant few chances for Cambridge.
These were dealt with easily by the defence of Ben Hales, Tom Baguley, Stef Fox and Matt Holmes, alongside some stellar saves by Alfie Braginton in goal.
Once the second half started, Sutton pushed back and tried to regain control, and with a slight formation change it was immediate.
Short corners were won, and whilst the end product was lacking the intention was still there.
The attacks kept coming, and with Ed White quarterbacking the play it was no surprise that Plant finished off his hat trick in style by sending the keeper the wrong way.
Again, some defensive work was carried out with relative ease, but the game was settled seven minutes from time with a decisive pass from White to Croxford, who beat a player and the keeper, before slotting into an empty net.
There was just enough time left in the game for Fox to take a short break and that was that with a 4-0 victory.

LSHC Ladies’ 2nd 0
Newmarket 3rd 3

Newmarket had first push back and with four across the middle they worked hard to get the ball into the D.
Winning a short corner the team tried to sweep it into the goal but it didn’t come off.
Newmarket started to gain confidence and managed a very quick goal and then managed to get through the defence again and at half time the score was 2-0.
The second half started but it just wasn’t to be.
Newmarket gained another goal from a very good straight strike and the game ended 3-0.
