Man avoids three-year-ban after second drug-driving offence in three months

A 20-year-old motorist from Spalding narrowly avoided a minimum three-year ban for his second drug-driving offence in three months.

Deivydas Rocys was caught over the limit in September last year and again in December.
More than one conviction for drink or drug-driving offences within a ten-year period triggers a mandatory minimum 36-month disqualification.
However, at Boston Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday Rocys dodged a longer ban because the conviction for his first offence came five days after he committed the second offence.
Instead, he was disqualified for 18 months and fined £120 after admitting being over the limit for a cannabis derivative in Little London, Spalding, on December 9.
He had 3.5 microgrammes of the substance per litre of blood in his system, the legal limit being two.
Charges of driving otherwise in accordance with a licence and having no insurance for the Honda
Jazz were withdrawn by the prosecution.
In mitigation, Mike Alexander said: “In September 2022 he was caught then and dealt with a few days after he was stopped for this current offence.”
The solicitor described Rocys as a hardworking person who started using cannabis to help him sleep.
The defendant, formerly of Hillary Close and now living in Clay Lake, was also ordered to pay £85 costs and £48 victim surcharge.
