Magpies’ character is praised after comeback

Long Sutton boss Matt Cawthorn praised the character of his side after they hit back from two goals down to share the spoils in a 3-3 draw at Stamford Bels on Saturday.

Cawthorn admitted he got his side’s formation wrong after they fell two goals adrift inside the opening half-hour of the Peterborough League Division One clash.

But he was delighted with their response after he changed things around to ensure they picked up their third point of the league campaign.

Cawthorn said: “It was a learning curve with the formation, but we are slowly building towards our first league win.
“I was confused about how we can go from being so high to so low within 30 minutes.

“The conditions were poor with the heavy rain, but that’s no excuse.

“I have to hold my hands up as I probably got the 4-3-3 formation wrong as, when we switched to 4-4-2, we got a foothold in the game.”

Sam Moses scored for the Magpies just before half-time to halve the deficit but, within two minutes of the restart, Bels had restored their two-goal advantage.

New signing Damien Ramm reduced the arrears and then an own goal got Sutton back on level terms before Billy Oliver missed a one-on-one to snatch victory.

Cawthorn, who has also bolstered his squad by signing Jake Narducci from Ketton, added: “I was happy with the character of my lads to keep battling away after being 2-0 and 3-1 down.”
