Late Edge strike maintains Tulips’ unbeaten start

An 87th minute Dylan Edge goal, his second of the game, ensured Spalding United’s unbeaten start to the Pitching In Northern Premier League Midlands Division season continued at the Sir Halley Stewart on Tuesday night.
The Tulips had looked set for a first league defeat of the season after visitors Corby Town grabbed an 82nd minute lead through Rio Molyneeaux’s.
They’d levelled 20 minutes earlier following a mix-up between Spalding keeper Lewis Elsom and Sam Cartwright who believed scorer Tsaguim Florian was offside after the ball was pumped forward.
But with three minutes left Edge kept his composure with a fine volley to make it ten unbeaten to start the season. The same player had earlier given his side the lead in the 33rd minute following a powerful run and fine finish into the corner from a tight angle.
The point followed up a more routine 3-0 win at St Neots Town as the Tulips returned to league action.
A quick start from them, and Cartwright in particular, set them on their way as they found themselves 2-0 up after only eight minutes.
Right from the kick off Spalding won a corner which Nathan Stainfield headed back across goal for Cartwright to volley in for a third minute lead.
The same players combined similarly for the second five minutes later.
Bradley Rolt also hit the bar in the first half.
It was a professional performance from the Tulips as they soaked up pressure while looking dangerous on the counter, Jordan O’Brien going close on one such occasion.
Late substitutions saw Spalding dominate the final period of the game but they had to wait for the 90th minute to get the third goal of the game.
A long throw into the box by James Clifton wasn’t cleared and it fell to Morgan Penfold to make it 3-0.
Spalding remain third in the table, five points below leaders Halesowen Town who have played a game more, and four behind the only other unbeaten side, Stamford.
In fourth, level on points with the Tulips, are Loughborough Dynamo who Spalding travel to for a 3pm kick off on Saturday.
