Improving Spalding Golf Club hand Blankney a first home loss in Scratch League

Spalding Golf Club’s rapidly-improving first team continued their fine form as they chalked up a 4-2 victory away at a Blankney side that had been unbeaten at home.

Winning pairs for Spalding were Keith Hearne and Ollie Mitchell, Dan Hines and Lloyd Chatham, Captain Andy Grimwood and Mark Mitchell, and Simon Richardson and Tom Ladbrook.

Despite the win, Spalding remain bottom of Division One of the South Lincolnshire Scratch League.

However, they do have games in hand on the two sides – Sleaford and Burghley Park – that are directly above them.

It’s now two wins from six games for Spalding, who have four points. Sleaford top the table with ten points, with Blankney hot on their heels in second place.

  • Club vice captain Mike Crampton captained the second team for their fixture with Boston Golf Club – and the same 4-2 victory was achieved.

Winning pairs for Spalding were Crampton and Lawrie Haley, Dave Perrott and Maurice Crunkhorn, Geoff Moyses and Eddie Seymour and Stuart East and Robin Roffe.

  • The July Medal was played at the Surfleet course with 138 golfers taking to the field.

Tricky conditions saw only eight players break par, and it was recent winner Ted Portass who came in with a nett 69 to win by one shot from Spen Gooderson.

One shot further back on 71 were up and coming club juniors Tom Langford and Tommy Hull, as were Gary Climo, Chris Brooks and Miles Foden.

Portass also saw his handicap reduced by one to 22 for his efforts.

  • Spalding’s 3rd team saw their good run continue with a notable 3.5-2.5 win over Belton Park.

The pairs of Graham Chamberlain and John Cretney and Rob Sampson and Stevie Hall both won, while skipper Ian Ford and Stu Parker also gained a valuable half.

But the most notable achievement of the evening was a 3&2 win from Phil Smith, who played against the Belton pair on his own following a late player withdrawal.
