Home double as table-topping Spalding United aim to stay in command

Spalding United are hoping to strengthen their grip on pole position of the EvoStik League Division One South in a double whammy of home matches.

The Tulips play host to Gresley on Saturday (3pm) before Rugby Town make the trip to the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field on Tuesday night (7.45pm).

Dave Frecklington’s charges are currently unbeaten in their seven league outings and boast a 100 per cent home record.

They will go into the home clashes buoyed by a victory double in their last two away matches.

Spalding ran out 3-2 victors over Market Drayton on Saturday before claiming a 2-1 away success at Belper Town on Tuesday night.

Saturday’s visitors Gresley are also unbeaten in the league, but they did bow out of the FA Cup on Tuesday night after losing their replay 1-0 away at Stamford.

The Moatmen appointed Damion Beckford-Quailey as their new manager in the close season after he had led Leicester Nirvana’s United Counties League Premier Division title challenge last season.

Tuesday’s visitors Rugby will also have a new man at their helm with former player Gary Moran currently taking caretaker charge.

Moran has taken over following the resignation of former Stamford and King’s Lynn midfielder James Jepson who had been appointed in May.

Jepson left Butlin Road with Rugby currently third from bottom in the league standings.
