Holbeach United targeting a sweet FA Cup run to boost club coffers

Holbeach United switch their attention to The Emirates FA Cup on Saturday as they host Ely City in the Extra Preliminary Round (3pm).

The Tigers haven’t had much joy in the competition in recent years, having only made the first qualifying round once in five years (2012).

That’s something boss Darren Jarvis would like to improve on this year, with a money-spinning cup run very much in his plans.

Jarvis said: “Just the fact that we are able to compete in the FA Cup is a real blessing.

“It’s a competition that everyone at the club can enjoy. Obviously we know we have no chance at all of winning the cup, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a big deal for us.

“Going as far as you possibly can in the FA Cup really builds up the players’ confidence and allows a feel-good factor to grow at the club.

“It also brings in welcome funds to the football club, which is the biggest attraction.

“There’s also the carrot of a clash with Wisbech Town if both clubs can progress, so there’s a lot to play for.”

Saturday’s opponents Ely were relegated from the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division last season, making them a step six side (one grade lower than the Tigers).

They now ply their trade in the same league as March Town, who Holbeach beat 3-0 in pre-season.

Jarvis is refusing to take the challenge lightly – and expects a tough test.

He added: “There’s no doubt that it’ll be a difficult game for us.

“Regardless of what happened last season, I’ve always known Ely to be a side that plays good football.

“We just want to put in a good performance in front of our own fans and get a bit of a feel-good factor going on at Carter’s Park.”

Player/coach Andrew Tidswell is available to return for Holbeach having missed Saturday’s disappointing defeat at Desborough Town.

Midfielder Ollie Pinner is also set to return to the squad, but Tommy Treacher remains sidelined.

Dan Woods may not feature either, given that his other registered side – March Town – are in league action against Halstead Town. Should they win on Saturday, Holbeach will bank £1,500 in prize money.

They will also secure a trip to either Wisbech Town or Diss Town in the preliminary round on Saturday, August 29.
