Highways councillor to aid improvements

New ventures are to be explored to increase footfall and revenue in Spalding town centre.

Among the possibilities following on from the 16-stall Italian market in Sheep Market this Sunday (from 10am) are car dealerships showcasing vehicles in Market Place and flea markets.

Spalding and District Area Chamber of Commerce president Phil Scarlett said: “Spalding needs to make the best use of all its assets and we need to find a way to allow this to happen.

“If the Italian market is a success, the intention is to bring other markets to the town, such as a continental market, French market and a German market on a regular basis.”

The possibilities were discussed when Coun Richard Davies, portfolio holder for highways and transport at Lincolnshire County Council, visited for talks last week.

Coun Davies agreed to look into the possible use of Market Place, Hall Place, Red Lion Street and Bridge Street for commercial enterprises on non-market days.

Meanwhile, Spalding town centre manager Dennis Hannant is to further investigate the idea of Into Town buses going through Market Place and Hall Place.

District and county councillor Angela Newton has proposed the idea, and talks with bus operator Brylaine and the county council, which subsidises the scheme, would be sought.

South Holland Transport Logistics Forum chairman Trevor Hyde made the case to Coun Davies for improvements to the A16 near Spalding, given that 37 per cent of the UK’s fresh food comes in/out of South Holland with more than one million truck movements.

“Pinch points” for traffic congestion were discussed and it was agreed that several roundabouts needed improvements and the introduction of a third lane would greatly assist traffic flow and safety.

A business case will be drawn up and a further meeting held in two months’ time with highways officers.

Spalding Town Forum chairman Coun George Aley stated the need for improved traffic management in the town.

Coun Davies agreed to look into possible timings improvements.

Meanwhile, a plan for a new train station at Littleworth crossing in Deeping St Nicholas was championed by Spalding and Peterborough Transport Forum.

Coun Davies advised group representative George Scott to ensure that there is reference to it within the South East Lincolonshire Plan.

He urged the group to pursue the train operator to provide more passenger trains, including a Sunday service.

Mr Scott agreed to contact East Midlands Trains to arrange a meeting.

Spalding Chamber said it was prepared to attend and support the need for a more frequent service.
