Gray’s knock fails to lift Sutton

There was a defeat for Long Sutton on Saturday, but other results mean they didn’t lose too much ground in the race to be crowned South Lincolnshire and Border League champions.

Nearest challengers Newborough were 55 for 7 and looking set for defeat chasing Grantham 2nd XI’s 255 for 9 when the rain came.
As a result they did pick up 12 points compared to Long Sutton’s six in an eight- wicket defeat to Boston.
Jake Burton’s side were put in and found it largely tough going as they lost wickets at regular intervals.
However Jacob Gray was in fine form and hit an excellent 92 from 110 balls including 11 fours.
The next highest scorer was Josh Baker who hit 17 in 14 balls amid the innings’ biggest partnership that took Sutton from 150 for 6 to 192 before the last three wickets fell for eight runs.
Sutton were 200 all out in the 42nd over.
In the reply Paul Edgeller (1 for 20) induced an early wicket having Scott Elleray (4) caught by Nathan Oliver with the score on 19.
But Matthew Hood joined opener Ben Troops, the former scoring a quicker than a run a ball 46 in a partnership of 77.
Charlie Crisp (1 for 35) bowled Hood with the score on 96, but that was as good as it got for Sutton.
Troops (72 not out) was joined by Damian Lawson (55 not out) to see Boston comfortably home with 13 overs to spare.
Long Sutton will hope to get back to winning ways when they visit Bourne 2nds on Saturday.
