Golf round-up: Stuart sees off big Spalding field to secure President’s Putter crown

Stuart McDougall topped an impressive field of 136 players to win Spalding Golf Club’s President’s Putter competition on Saturday.

His score of nett 65 was enough for victory at the Surfleet coirse, edging Philip Tweddell (nett 66) into second place.

On what was an incredibly close day of action, David Perrott wrapped up third place – edging out both David Whisker and Calum Lewis on countback after all three shot a nett 67.

  • Dave Inglis and Rod Filby were the divisional winners in Spalding Golf Club’s John Haydon Salver.

Inglis took top spot in Division One, with Brian Killigrew and Albert Jacobs second and third respectively.

Filby won the Division Two battle ahead of Rob Prew and Ian Jones.

  • Spalding’s 3rd team lost 5-1 at Toft on Tuesday.

The course was very dry with the ball running a long way. Captain Greg Wright and Pete Williams managed a fine 4&3 win under the conditions.

Spalding’s senior side beat their counterparts from Torksey 4.5-3.5 on an immaculate-looking Surfleet course last Monday.

Wins came from Dennis Farnsworth and Tony Holbrook (3&2), Jim Dobson and Bernard Herbert (4&3), Monty Brittain and Peter Saunders (4&3) and Alan Pritchard and Rod Filby (2&1), while Rod Hunt and Andy Reedman halved.

  • Some 33 teams of four ladies from many different clubs took part in Spalding Golf Club’s Summer AM-AM.

The competition was played in a Stableford format and to 90 per cent handicap up to a maximum 30 – with three to score on the first nine, and 2 on the second.

The winners, on countback, were Susan Brown, Helen Bradshaw, Susan Smith and Margaret Hope from Canwick Park with 99 points.

Second spot went to Gill Dewhurst (Spalding), Pat Richardson, Johanne Pywell and Sam Gooderson (Searles), also on 99.

In third were Ingrid King (Spalding), Carol Houldershaw and Nancy Barnard (Woohhall Spa) and Penny Russell (Boston West) with 98 points.

Fourth, on countback, went the way of Kibworth quartet Yvonne Thompson, Julie Simpson, Henny Woodland and Joy Hall, on 97 points.

Behind them in fifth were Olive Gooderson and Mags Filby (Spalding), Maria Taylor-Vassel (Tydd St Giles), and Maggie Clarkson (King’s Lynn).

An amazing 115 ladies entered the 2s competition – which was shared by Helen Bradshaw (Canwick), Lynda Double (Spalding) and Penny Russell (Boston West) after all made twos on the ninth hole.

  • Tydd St Giles Golf Club’s seniors put on their annual Bob Johns Classic – and more than 80 golfers from around the region took part.

The competition is held in memory of Bob Johns, a member who passed away eight years ago and has been run by his family to benefit their charity.

Senior organiser Roy Pesterfield was pleased to announce that this year the competition has raised £600 which will go to Cancer Research UK,

Scoring 136 points, the Tydd team of Salvatore Di Bella, Ian Larman, Steve Skoulding and Steve Wing took the victory. Runners-up, with 126 points (ocb), were Richard Scott, Alfie Collins, Tony Spinks and John Leake (Leakes Loonies GC).

Men’s section: August Stableford Pairs – 1st Peter Wheeler & Bally Sigurdsson 45pts; 2nd James Woods & Gary Withers 44pts; 3rd Gino Ciuffini & Jamie Stott 42pts (ocb); 4th Wayne Alder & Will Woodrow 42pts.
