Going, going, gone (noisily)…4am Aldi demolition work criticised

Demolition work going on until 4am in preparation for an extension of Spalding’s Aldi store has caused complaints.

The work started late on Friday (March 10) and went through until the early hours on Saturday. The same happened on Saturday night.
There was further work after the store closed on Sunday until 10pm.

St Thomas’s Road resident Alan Long lives opposite the site and was angry at the lack of consideration. He said he had not received forewarning of the work.

“There was banging and crashing throughout,” he added. “I couldn’t sleep. Who in their right minds would arrange this to go on through the night?
“This is a residential area, not an industrial estate.”

Mr Long, who suffers from osteoporosis and fibromyalgia, filmed the demolition work at various points through the night and posted them on Aldi’s Facebook page.
He also lodged complaints with South Holland District Council, district councillor Jack McLean and MP John Hayes.

An Aldi spokesperson said on Tuesday: “We apologise for any disruption caused. We’d like to reassure local residents that these works have now finished.”

Three shop and office units in Winsover Road have been demolished.
