Get your mental health into step

A mental health campaigner is launching a series of walks during January including one marking the 25th anniversary of the death of a local councillor’s dad.

Vanessa Browning, who runs Community Mind Matters, is taking part in Red January.
It aims to get people out and about doing small exercises first before jumping into more strenuous exertions.
“I’ve been doing Red January for a few years now and trying to encouraging people that are struggling with the mental health to get out and join in exercise,” Vanessa said. “I will be doing some walks round Ayscoughfee for people to join in.
“Red January is national movement for mental health wellbeing that empowers people to overcome barriers that currently lead to higher inactivity and lower wellbeing in winter so that aim is to get people moving through January with exercise.
“People can check Community Mind Matters walking group page for more information or contact me on 07376 157004.”
One of the works is taking place on Sunday, January 14 at 11am and being organised in conjunction with Ella’s Project, operated by Mark Le Sage.
It will mark the 25th anniversary of the death by suicide of the district councillor’s dad Malcolm.
“This is a walk and talk, an opportunity for anyone who is struggling with their mental health to come and enjoy some fresh air with people who will listen without judgement and offer support and signposting if appropriate,” Mark said. “All are welcome, New Year is always a difficult time for me and I’m grateful for the support of my friends, family and band who help me through what is always a difficult month.”
