Festive lecture will be music to the ears

Ding dong merrily on high, Christmas music is the featured lecture for the Spalding Gentlemen’s Society this month.

Dr Gant is a lecturer in music at St Peter’s College, Oxford.

He is a musician, author, academic, composer, and singer and was formally organist and choirmaster at the Chapel Royal.

His book “The Carols of Christmas’ has been described as “a joyous account of the history behind our favourite carols”.

A man of many talents, he also set the text of the Poet Laureate Andrew Motion to music, creating ‘A Hymn for the Golden Jubilee’ as part of the 2002 Jubilee celebrations, at the request of the Lord Chamberlain’s Office at Buckingham Palace.

The piece was sung in many places across the world, as well as to Queen Elizabeth II in a concert at Windsor Castle.

His brief for the Spalding Methodist Church on Broad Street on December 9 is to give a musical lecture with a Christmas theme and it is anticipated that he may make use of the instruments available at the church.

Spalding Gentlemen’s Society lectures are held at Broad Street Methodist Church, Spalding and start at 7.30pm with an admission charge of £3 each at the door.

There’s no charge for students and school pupils.

A spokesman for the Gentleman’s Society, said: “All are welcome.”
