Enforced winter break won’t harm Holbeach United’s title hopes

Tom Roberts admits that he and his Holbeach United side feel like they’ve had a mini pre-season after seeing games galore postponed.

The Tigers have only played once since defeating Northampton Sileby Rangers on December 19 – and have yet to kick a ball in 2016.

They’ve seen games against Wisbech Town, Leicester Nirvana and Kempston Rovers called off in recent weeks, meaning that they’re in line for a busy second half of the season.

Roberts is also worried that more rain could see Saturday’s scheduled home clash with Rothwell Corinthians (3pm) fall foul of the weather again.

Carter’s Park was covered with standing water last Saturday – and more rainfall is forecast ahead of the weekend.

Despite the postponements, Roberts isn’t concerned about a fixture pile-up derailing Holbeach’s hopes of a ChromaSport UCL Premier Division double.

He said: “We don’t really want to be playing catch-up and having to get four games a week in towards the end of the season.

“But there’s nothing we can do about it, pretty much every other side is in the same boat at the moment.

“We’ve been training indoors, but every player will tell you that they’d rather be out on the pitch.

“It’s funny, we’ve had so little football lately that it feels like a mini pre-season.

“Saying that, I remember Wisbech having a great second half of the season last year, so I wouldn’t say our chances are being hit too hard by the break.

“I don’t know a massive amount about Rothwell, but they’ve done well since coming up.”

Holbeach have a strong squad to pick from on Saturday, with only Tommy Treacher and Josh Ford unavailable.

They should be able to call upon the services of in-demand forward Jordan Thomas, too. Having turned down Spalding United last week, he is the subject of a seven-day notice of approach from Deeping Rangers this week.

Roberts expects the versatile frontman to snub their advances too.
