Emotional Holbeach United send off for late legend Pete before Tigers roar to win

Holbeach United paid tribute to club legend Pete Cousins on Saturday following his death last week.

Pete, who had been synonomous with the Tigers since 1947 and even has a stand at Carter’s Park named after him, died last Tuesday aged 92.

Before Saturday’s friendly with Deeping Rangers, which Holbeach won 2-1, a wreath was laid in front of his stand and a minute of applause was undertaken by both South Lincolnshire sides.

A Holbeach club statement said: “The club are saddened to hear of the passing of club stalwart and legend Pete Cousins.

“Pete had been involved in one way or another with the club since 1947.

“We would like to pass on our condolences and thoughts to Pete’s family at this sad time.”

Pete’s funeral is on Thursday (July 28) at St Mary’s Church, Whaplode (1.30pm).

On the field, Holbeach’s impressive pre-season continued with an eye-catching victory over a Deeping Rangers side that finished 49 points better off than them in last year’s Uhlsport UCL Premier Division North campaign.

After a goalless first half, Deeping went ahead before Adrian Bilicz levelled with a strike from 18 yards.

Cal Davies, who along with Bilicz scored in the 4-1 win at Bourne Town the previous week, then clinched the win for Holbeach from the penalty spot.

The Tigers also play at Yaxley tonight (Wednesday) in a quickly-arranged clash and visit March Town on Friday night (7.30pm).

They then host Crowland Town on Tuesday night (also 7.30pm).

Meanwhile, Holbeach’s first game of the Thurlow Nunn First Division North season is at home to Needham Market under-23s on August 6 (3pm).

That’s followed by an away game at Debenham LC (Aug 13) and a home clash with AFC Sudbury Reserves (August 20).

August then concludes with a trip to FC Parson Drove (Aug 23) before that FA Vase game at Pinchbeck United on August 27.

Speaking of Pinchbeck, they enjoyed a 3-1 victory over Barrow Town on Thursday night.

The Knights’ goals came from Jake Henderson, Kyle Onyon and Elliot Foster.

Lewis Thorogood’s side were back in action with a clash against Wyberton tonight (Wednesday).

Pinchbeck are also scheduled to be in home action against Huntingdon Town on Saturday (3pm) as they prepare of the UCL Premier Division North season.
