Elections called in west Spalding

Two candidates have come forward to stand for election to replace the district council role left by the death of Angela Newton.

The South Holland District Council election is set to take place on Thursday, December, 8.

Steve Timewell (pictured far right), the organiser of next year’s Spalding Flower Parade, and Suresh Chauhan (Sam) have both stepped forward as potential district council members.

Mr Timewell is a Conservative candidate while Mr Chauhan is independent, as was the late Coun Newton.
New council members need to be elected for both the Spalding Monkshouse ward on South Holland

District Council, and the Spalding West Division on Lincolnshire County Council.
Councillor Newton died in August and had been on the district council for nearly 50 years.

Mr Timewell, who lives in West Pinchbeck, has become well-known in recent times for his plan to resurrect the Flower Parade next May.

He said he wanted to meet the electorate to discuss what concerns them.

While being inspired by the late Coun Newton, Mr Timewell said it was time for a change and he feels at home with the Conservatives.

Mr Chauhan says he has lived in the county for 15 years and had previously helped Coun Newton with leaflet distributing and litter-picking.

“Angela’s energy and perseverance with projects inspired me to try and continue her good work. I can’t promise to be as good as Angela, but I can promise that I will try,” he said.

South Holland District Council says it has received a formal request for an election by two South Holland electors triggering the Notice of Election.

Details of any county candidates have not been revealed as of yet.

Candidates can still submit nomination papers to stand in either election at the council’s Priory Road offices in Spalding, between 10am and 4pm on any weekday until Friday, November 11.

Make a prior appointment with the council’s election team on 01775 764837.

An election for both positions will then be held on Thursday, December 8, if two or more people come forward.

Residents will be able to cast their votes on the day between 7am and 10pm.

The deadline to register to vote is midnight on Tuesday, November 22.

New applications for proxy votes will need to be made by Wednesday, November 30.
