Edgeller’s first Saturday ton in vain for Long Sutton

Long Sutton 1st (191) lost to Woodhall Spa 2nd (225-5) by 34 runs

Paul Edgeller hit a stunning 107 for Long Sutton on Saturday – but it wasn’t enough to help his side complete a thrilling run chase in the South Lincs and Border League’s Premier Division.

The knock was Edgeller’s first century in Saturday cricket, having helped himself to a number of Sunday tons already this season.

Ultimately it mattered little, as Sutton continued their disappointing run of league form after a mediocre bowling and fielding display left them with too much to do with the bat.

Electing to bowl first, Sutton started steadily with all-rounder Edgeller beating the outside edge on numerous occasions.

However, both openers looked pretty comfortable and scored pretty freely on a decent pitch as they looked to set the platform for a big score.

That was until skipper Matt Bull (1-42) broke the deadlock that Sutton gained any momentum in the innings.

He bowled well in tandem with Jake Burton (0-39) whose 12-over spell came without luck.

Two run-outs did occur in the innings, but the home sides tactic of aggressive running heaped pressure on Sutton – forcing them into too many mistakes.

Edgeller (1-54) and Jimmy Wright (1-61) did pick up wickets in the closing overs, but Woodhall had reached a commanding 225-5 from their allocation with Jack Timby (64) and Ben McCarrick (52) both passing 50.

Sutton’s reply started in the worst possible manner as they lost both Chris Booth (4) and Ed Booth (0) in the first seven balls, before Adam Wright (4) and Jimmy Wright (3) followed suite to leave the away side reeling.

A partnership between Edgeller and Jimmy Harrison steadied the innings as they looked to reach a respectable total. Harrison (15) eventually fell, but Edgeller continued on his way with skipper Bull for company.

However, Lewis Holmes (6-45) then bowled Bull (21), Dan Oldfield (0) and Burton (2) to leave Edgeller running out of partners as he neared his hundred.
It was imperative that he reached the landmark in order for Sutton to mount an assault on the target – and Jeremy Smith (18) joined him at the crease and succeeded in seeing his partner to three figures.

Edgeller eventually fell for 107 as he attempted to up the rate and that was curtains for Sutton, who fell 34 runs short in what would have been a remarkable chase.

  • Long Sutton 2nd endured a miserable afternoon in South Lincs and Border League Division One as Billingborough 2nd handed them a five-wicket loss.

Danny Sisson (31) and Jack Smith (10) were the only two to make double figures as Sutton were skittled out for 72 batting first at Paradise Field on Saturday.

Rob Simpson (3-36) and Sisson (2-35) shone with the ball, but Billingborough only needed 16 overs to reach their target of 73-5.
