Early goals ease Pinchbeck United to Ketton win ahead of key clash at Sports Reserves

Chuffed chief Ian Dunn praised his Pinchbeck United side for getting the job done early in their 2-0 win over Ketton on Saturday.

In what was one of their harder remaining fixtures in ChromaSport PDFL Premier Division, goals from Liam Ogden (1) and Callum Lawe (20) fired treble-chasing Pinchbeck to a big three points at Knight Street.

Ogden showed great footwork before picking out the top corner in style inside the first minute for the Knights, before Lawe rounded off a lovely move with a super side-footed strike from distance to all but end the clash as a contest before the midway point of the opening period.

Player/boss Dunn, who rested himself and skipper Nick Bishop, felt his side could have scored a few more.

But he was pleased with the discipline shown as Pinchbeck saw out the game to keep their title charge on track.

“We started the game really well and played at a good tempo,” said the ex-Boston Town chief. “After 20 minutes it was job done, to be fair.

“After that we did what we needed to do to make sure we won the game.

“It was all about looking after the lead – and I thought we did that really well.

“I felt we restricted a very good Ketton side to very little and only really felt they would score if we made a mistake.

“It was one of our harder remaining games and we’ve got other big ones to come, so I felt we needed to use the squad.

“We scored two good goals and would have had a few more but for some great saves from their keeper.

“We’re all about winning at this stage of the season, performances don’t matter.

“The lads stuck to their task well and I’m very pleased with the win, especially as we were able to rest a few.”

Pinchbeck visit title rivals Peterborough Sports Reserves on Tuesday night (7.45pm) and travel to Langtoft United on Saturday (3pm).

Assistant boss Allan Ross said: “Obviously we go there looking to win, but a draw is no longer a bad result for us.

“Will they throw a few first-teamers in? I don’t know. They have a great management team there and I think they’d want to give the Reserve team the chance to win the league themselves.

“But if we’re up against a Mark Jones or a Josh Moreman, it’ll be a great individual battle for our lads – and one that we’ll relish.”
