Dunn gutted as Railway derail Pinchbeck United’s county cup bid

Player/boss Ian Dunn rued a chance missed as Pinchbeck United crashed out of the Lincs Junior Cup on Saturday.

Dunn’s side were beaten 3-2 at lower-graded Railway Athletic, who play in Division Two of the Boston and District League.

Pinchbeck were surprised to see their hosts start with Wisbech Town’s Luke Wilson in their side – and they trailed 1-0 at the break.

That became 3-0 early in the second half, but Liam Ogden and Dan Woods netted to set up a grandstand finish.

The loss ends Pinchbeck’s ten-game unbeaten streak stretching back to September.

Dunn did feel that his side had enough to go all the way in the competition this year, but admits Railway were worthy winners on the day.

He said: “They are certainly not a typical Boston Division Two side. Especially not with Luke Wilson playing.

“It makes a huge difference to any side having a player of that ability.

“That’s not sour grapes, though. They had four chances and scored three very good goals from long range. We had plenty of chances but missed too many. Credit must go to Railway, they played to the best of their ability and were worthy winners.

“I did feel that we’d have won the tie if we had managed to take it to extra time, mind. It’s a shame, I genuinely thought that we had enough in the dressing room to win the competition.”

Pinchbeck: McCready, Leggett, B Murrell, Lawe, A Murrell, Francis, Bishop, Gardner, Woods, Edwards, Ogden. Subs used: Dunn, Jenkins, Jucikas.

Sutton Bridge, meanwhile, won 6-1 at Chapel Swifts. Ben Partridge (2), Matt Eaton, Sam Lilley, Kurt Scott and Joe Sutton got the goals.

  • Long Sutton Athletic are out of the PFA Challenge Cup after losing a penalty shoot-out 4-3 at Ketton Reserves. The game finished 0-0.

Spalding Town march on, though, after a fine 4-2 win at higher-ranked Moulton Harrox Reserves.

Mark Astley, Gav Bailey, Gary Booth and Markus Parry notched for Division Two side Town, while Tom Panton bagged twice for Harrox.
