Duffy double helps Holbeach United cut Diamonds’ advantage

Holbeach United seized control of the UCL Premier Division title race on Saturday as they beat Kempston Rovers 3-0 to cash in on a slip-up from leaders AFC Rushden and Diamonds.

A Jake Duffy double (35 & 63) and a further strike from Jamie Clarke (39) eased the Tigers to all three points at Carter’s Park against a Kempston side that had won four on the bounce.

And, with Diamonds stunned 2-0 at struggling Oadby Town, Holbeach are now just two points behind the leaders with two games in hand.

The pair clash at Carter’s Park in the Tigers’ next league outing on January 24 in what promises to be real cracker.

Duffy, who scored the only goal in Wednesday’s vital victory over Yaxley, applied the finishing touches to a top Tigers move that involved Clarke and Stacy Cartwright to open the scoring ten minutes before the break.

The lead was doubled minutes later when Clarke turned in a Jonny Allen cross. There was a suspicion that a Kempston defender got the last touch but Clarke, like any good striker, is claiming the goal.

Midfield ace Duffy clinched the victory 20 minutes into the second period after a Matt Nolan cutback to make it a top day all round for Graham Drury and John Chand’s side.

Elsewhere, Moulton Harrox marched into the semi-finals of the Lincs FA Junior Cup. They needed extra time, but saw off hosts RM Imp to keep their hopes of county glory alive.

In the Peterborough Premier Division, Pinchbeck United moved into the top six with a 4-0 victory over Riverside at Knight Street.

Also in the top flight, Holbeach United Reserves drew 1-1 at Thorney and Crowland Town were beaten 4-1 at home by high-flying Netherton United.
