SWOOP: Graham Drury has brought David Deeney to Holbeach United.

Drury’s delight at Deeney deal ahead of Star test

Holbeach United will have a new face in their ranks against high-flying Peterborough Northern Star tomorrow (Saturday) after sealing a deal to sign David Deeney from St Neots Town.

The versatile Deeney, who can play at right back and in midfield, is expected to go straight into the side for the crunch Carter’s Park clash (3pm).

Joint Tigers boss Graham Drury admits that he and fellow chief John Chand have been keeping an eye on Deeney for a while – and is delighted to have landed his man.

Drury said: “We’ve been keeping tabs on the situation over at St Neots. They’ve got a big squad and not everybody has been able to get a game.

“When we heard that David may be available we made a move – and it was great to see that he was very keen to come and play here.

“He’ll bring a lot of energy to the team. He’ll probably slot in at right back for us initially, but he’s a very good midfield player too.

“We’re not looking to rest on our laurels here. If we can improve the team, we will – and David fits the bill.

“We’d like to bring one more player in if we can, but the team is really doing well at the moment.”

Deeney is likely to replace the unavailable Danny Spencer in the back four for the UCL Premier Division leaders, who go into the Star game in fine fettle after an unprecedented week.

The Tigers saw off hosts Sleaford Town 5-2 on Tuesday night to move five points clear at the top of the table, before then defeating Boston Town 4-1 on penalties in the Lincs FA Senior Trophy after a 4-4 draw the following night.

Saturday should serve up a tougher test for Drury and Chand’s side, though. Visitors Star come into the game in sixth place and boast one of the league’s leading scorers in Avelino Vieira.

The Tigers saw off the city side 6-1 on the opening day of the season, but did endure a torrid 20 minutes before Star’s Jonny Clay was sent off for a professional foul.

Drury has plenty of respect for a side co-bossed by Darren Jarvis and Michael Goode – and is expecting a spicy affair.

He added: “They have been doing very well and have won a lot of games this season. I’ve been impressed.

“Things got a bit spicy against them last time and I’m expecting more of the same. They’ll be there or thereabouts in the top six or seven and we’ll give them our full attention.”
