NOT GR-EIGHT: Matt Cawthorn endured the worst game of his stint as Sutton boss.

Crushing Oundle defeat is ‘worst game’ of Cawthorn’s Long Sutton managerial reign

Player/boss Matt Cawthorn described Long Sutton Athletic’s 8-2 ChromaSport PDFL Division One loss at Oundle Town as the worst game of his reign so far.

A well-worked goal from Damien Ramm couldn’t stop Sutton going in 2-1 down at half-time – having also played with the famous slope in their favour.

The Magpies should really have scored a few more such was the level of their performance, but they slumped after the interval and shipped six more – rendering Ant Melton’s late effort as scant consolation.

Cawthorn said: “I’ve praised the character of the lads in previous weeks, but next week’s game at Netherton will really show who’s in this for the club and who is committed.

“We didn’t play that badly, but conceding eight is embarrassing for the players and management together.

“We’re a team from top to bottom. We must talk about the positives and negatives collectively and put this one to bed.

“We’ve been on a decent little run, but Oundle will go down as the worst game of my management reign.”

The loss leaves Sutton seventh in the table.
