An initiative to give ‘an intensive clean’ to South Holland’s towns is due to begin on Monday.
South Holland District Council says it’s taking on a Christmas Clean-Up as part of an intensive 30-day cleaning programme planned across six towns and villages.
The Clean-Up will begin in Sutton Bridge, before heading to Long Sutton, Holbeach, Crowland, Spalding and Donington throughout December and early January.
A spokesman for the council, said: “Each centre or high street will receive several days of focused deep-cleaning, including litter-picking, the removal of weeds and rubbish, sweeping of footpaths and the cleaning of any street furniture.
“The team will be out on weekday mornings and afternoons using the Council’s sweepers, glutton machine, jet wash and leaf blowers, as well as other equipment.
“The timing of the programme is designed to help improve the shopping experience for residents and visitors and encourage people back into town centres, to support local businesses during the vital Christmas retail period.
“A dedicated team of workers will be carrying out the clean-up, as part of the Welcome Back Funding through the European Regional Development Fund, organised through the town centre improvement plan, overseen by coordinator Beth Stinson.
“It is just one part of the Council’s wider programme to support the District’s economy, local businesses and town centres in recent months. This includes the distribution of recovery and growth grants, a series of initiatives including free parking during the summer, events like the Pumpkin and Christmas Celebrations, and the creation of the Holbeach and Spalding Shop Local Prize Draw.”
Councillor Nick Worth, deputy leader and portfolio holder for people, places, economy, said: “I am really pleased that we are able to start the big Christmas Clean-Up across all our main town centres and high streets to make them as attractive as possible.
“I hope that this, along with the events we are putting on, continues to encourage people back to do their shopping locally, as our businesses and traders need our support more than ever as they recover from the impact of COVID-19 and lockdowns.
“Along with our residents we are all rightly proud of the areas we live in and working together we can keep our towns clean and tidy. We would however like to remind households not to present refuse or recycling earlier than their collection day, and, if you see any areas that you feel need cleaning or attention, please report them to us as soon as possible.”
