COLUMN: Looking forward to a busy May

I had a fantastic day last Sunday in Spalding town centre when I was present at the St George’s Day Parade, attended by over 300 members of the South Holland Scouts and Guides.

The parade assembled in Hall Place and was led by the Marching Ambassadors, who put on an excellent show, through the Market Place and on to St Mary and St Nicolas Church for a “Promise Service”.

During the service Mike Jackson was presented with an award for 50 years’ service to the scouts, which is a magnificent achievement by anyone’s standards; so extremely well done to him.

After the service there were refreshments in the Vista, which were kindly sponsored by Bakkavor Foods.

The event proved that scouting and guiding are amazing organisations for young people, as well as adult volunteers to get involved in, so if you are looking for an interesting challenge, look them up on the internet.

Next year it is hoped that more local youth organisations will take part.

The month of May is upon us and there is a great deal of activity happening in the town.

On Saturday Spalding Cycling Club is holding a number of events at Monkhouse Lane Playing Fields and on Sunday will be staging a cycling event in the town centre, which will include an Italian Pursuit style inter-schools challenge in the morning and an inter-club challenge in the afternoon.

There will also be a number of stalls selling cycling paraphernalia and high energy foods, so if you are into fast and furious sport and of course Lycra, the town centre is the place to be.

TulipMania is also being held this Bank holiday weekend at Springfields Events and Conference Centre which will include a classic car rally, the Tulip Princess and Prince competition, plus musical entertainment, organised and compared by Tulip Radio’s Jan Whitbourn.

May 13 heralds in the “Love Your Local Market” campaign and windy winter days aside, Spalding is extremely lucky to have such a good local market; but it’s only this good because you come and shop there!

The People’s Parade will be taking place on Sunday, May 24, with activities centred on the Sir John Gleed School. The parade will involve decorated handcarts that have been decorated by local schools and organisations, again a day not to be missed.

The latter part of May will see the placement of flower baskets on many shops and businesses throughout the town for Spalding in Bloom.

Many of these especially those on charity shops have been sponsored by local firms; a particular mention must be made of Pork Farms Spalding who donated £120 towards charity shop baskets.
