Colourful blooms to brighten town thanks to company

Spalding residents can look forward to a blooming future and a town full of colour when lockdown is lifted thanks to a local company.

The Bridge Farm Group is donating materials for around 100 hanging baskets and 15 flower troughs for the spring.

Members of Spalding Town Forum were told at last week’s meeting that the company had made the offer in an update on the progress of the Spalding Town Centre Steering Group.

“We are currently working with a local plant nursery who are very kindly donating materials for over 100 hanging baskets and approximately 15 troughs on track to be installed by the beginning of April and this will certainly improve the floral displays we have currently and further enhance the vibrancy of the town centre,” said Coun Harry Drury.

The donation also includes a contribution towards the cost of watering the plants.

Coun Angela Newton told the forum that there could be a shortfall of around £1,000 in the cost of watering.

“If people are filling baskets for free and doing what they can to make the town centre better, then we need to invest some of our reserves on behalf of the people of the district so the town looks good,” she said.

Louise Matola, UK managing director of Bridge Farm Group, said the company wanted everyone in the area to ‘have a little sunshine’ after the lockdown and pandemic.

“We are really keen to bring a bit of joy to the town centre as we come out of lockdown. We also want to work with some local care homes as well,” she said.

The company, which has three sites, recently built one of the largest glasshouses in Europe at Clay Lake and the front area will be landscaped in the spring to add more colour to the area.

It will also help out if the town enters the 2021 East Midlands in Bloom contest.
