Chippy tea for £1 helps to feed kids

Hundreds of children are being helped by a scheme running at a Spalding fish and chip shop.

And the owners of Phoenix Traditional Fish and Chips have no intention of ending the scheme so long as it’s being supported.

Since the start of the summer holidays the team has been offering the £1 meals for children.

No other purchase is necessary and donors have helped the chip shop owners get the initiative off the ground.

Hundreds of the £1 meals have already been served and there is enough in the kitty to provide around 270 more for families.

But even when the summer holidays come to an end the meals will still be on offer.

With an anonymous cash donation, £100 given by Aphoenix Care and ingredients from J&S Potatoes, the cheap meals have been flying out the door.

Tom Wood, part owner of the business, said the scheme had proved to be very popular.

“We are donating 110 per cent ourselves, buying stock, frying and I think it’s been a brilliant idea. We had not asked anyone for donations but the help came and now we have no plans to end, even when the schools go back,” he said.

Anyone can ask for a children’s meal, they don’t have to be pre-ordered and they are either burger, fishcake, nuggets, hotdog or sausage with chips.

“We are overwhelmed with your generosity. This week we have had a £30 donation for an anonymous customer to help feed 30 families,” said a company post on its Facebook page.

“There are no terms, you don’t need to purchase an adult meal to get this deal. Just ring us or come in and order. We are serving from 11am until we close Monday to Saturday.”

Launched on July 11, the idea came about due to the fast rising cost of living everyone is experiencing at the moment.

It has been met with a warm reception, with many people applauding the business for helping during a difficult time.

“Thank you for helping the children in this current climate,” said Dawn Fountain in a Facebook post.

“The kids loved it, I was expecting just a few chips, but there was plenty. It’s a very generous offer,” added Tracey Healey.
