Cawthorn hopes latest Sutton success will stand him in good stead for permanent role

A second-half purple patch saw Long Sutton Athletic storm to a 7-0 ChromaSport PDFL Division One win at Warboys Town on Saturday.

With Sutton missing a host of regulars for the 5.30pm kick-off, they were relatively happy to reach half time with the scores level at 0-0.

Within two minutes of the re-start player/boss Matty Cawthorn fired the Magpies into the lead with a low drive across goal from 18-yards, then Ryan Brothwell curled in number two into the top corner.

Amazingly, a frantic 20-minute period then saw Sutton race into a 7-0 lead with Cawthorn notching three more to take his tally for the season to an impressive 30 in 29 games.

Brian Nunes’ effort and an own goal rounded off the rout, with the Magpies now looking for a similar showing in their season finale at Sutton Bridge on Tuesday (6.30pm).

Having replaced Danny Goddard a few months ago, Cawthorn is hoping that he has done enough to convince the club that he is the man to take them forward next season as permanent chief.

Cawthorn said: “It was a very pleasing result considering we had seven or eight missing from the squad. Special mention goes to Steve Cousins for helping us out – he controlled the middle of the park.

“I’m a very happy gaffer as we cut out the mistakes which cost us at Wisbech and every player put in 100 per cent. What more can a manager ask for?

“I’m now eight games into my reign as sole manager, winning four and losing two – which I still don’t think we really deserved. Hopefully that stands me in good stead to carry on next season.”

Cawthorn added that he and everyone at Long Sutton are sending their best wishes to former Magpie Sam Cooper, who broke his leg and fractured his ankle playing for Sutton Bridge against Baston on Saturday.

That game finished 1-1, with Kurt Scott the scorer for Bridge.

Sutton: Taylor, Wayman, R Ward, Congreve, M Ward, Nunes, Cousins, Brothwell, Allen, Cawthorn, Rocha.
