Can you help drive Spalding charity?

A local charity that helps bring elderly people together says it’s in urgent need of new volunteers, particularly bus drivers.

The Meadows is a day centre based just off Park Road in Spalding which elderly people can pay a fee to attend.

The idea is to give them the opportunity, meet others, take part in games and crafts and enjoy a home-cooked meal.

However a number of volunteers are needed to help the services run, especially mini-bus drivers to pick up and take home the many who otherwise wouldn’t have access to transport to get to the sessions.

The centre is also looking for extra volunteers to help staff the day centre itself and for two additional trustees.

The Pinchbeck-based furniture recycling unit which helps raise funds for the charity is also looking for some volunteers to help in the shop at Pinchbeck.

Patrick Skells, chairman of trustees, said: “I have been involved with the Meadows Day Centre as a trustee for over ten years now and have seen first-hand what a brilliant service it provides to the elderly of Spalding and district.

“The centre gives the opportunity for people who may otherwise be rather isolated in their own homes to mix with like-minded people and make new friends in a caring and supervised environment.

“A home-cooked lunch is provided each day together with many other services such as hairdressing, bathing and chiropody.

“Advice about finances and benefits is available.

“By providing these services the Meadows can help support families generally and defer or delay the need for residential care.

“In order to provide these services at a reasonable cost the Meadows relies heavily on volunteers to drive the minibuses and act as escorts and also to help in the day centre itself.

“Volunteering is an enjoyable experience and gives individuals the opportunity to give something back to the local community and I can thoroughly recommend doing so.”
