Campaign to get footbridge built over level crossing

A campaign has been launched for a footbridge to be built next to the Winsover Road railway crossing in Spalding.

It is hoped that the space left by the demolition of the former signal box last weekend could be put to good use for a bridge, which could benefit pedestrians, and wheelchair users as well as encourage more people to cycle into the town centre.

But Network Rail has said that the current crossing’s “risk score” does not warrant a footbridge.

A spokesman said: “Currently the crossing risk score does not require Network Rail to install a footbridge at this location.

“The improved level crossing mitigates the risk sufficiently.

“It has been recognised that there could be a need to install a bridge at some time in the future and the removal of the signal box will provide more space for such a bridge.”

The footbridge campaign has been launched by South Holland district councillor Gary Taylor, who represents Spalding Castle ward, and candidate for St John’s ward, Jack McLean.

Mr McLean said: “The lack of long term consideration speaks volumes about their attitude, even on other issues such as the maintenance of their land.

“What we are missing from their response is any detail on what factors would constitute a need in the future, which should have been the basis of their response.

“Without that information we will still be pressing on, as our long term success could be founded on their long term commitment.”

The Winsover Road level crossing was recently upgraded as part of the GNGE project.

Previously, when the signal box was announced to be removed a plan for a doll museum was proposed by Spalding resident Christine Meggitt in order to preserve the history of the site.

Network Rail declined the proposal.

Coun Taylor said: “I support the need for a footbridge.

“There is a need to support cyclists, prams and wheelchair users.

“This would ease the pressure on people who need to cross this junction for work, shopping, and child care issues and also encourage residents to use Spalding’s facilities.”
