Book nooks will brighten up towns

Transported and South Holland District Council are inviting Spalding residents to send in their stories and memories to transform them into pieces of art.

Transported, a community arts project, wants to take memories sent in by local people and craft them into reality.

The selected stories will be turned into book nooks – pieces of artwork by designers and makers Kathleen Smith and Laura Mabbutt.

A book nook (pictured) is a miniature world, like a model scene or diorama, that sits on a bookshelf between books.

They will become part of a trail of book nooks in empty shop windows in Spalding to help brighten up the high street and share the stories of local people.

If participants need help to express the story they wish to submit, there is a downloadable PDF on Transported’s website to help document the memory in a variety of fun ways and to help the artists visualise and recraft the memory into a tiny sculpture.

The project is utilising Arts Council England funding as part of South Holland’s District Council initiative to improve Spalding and Holbeach town centres.

A council spokesman said: “Working with our partners and in consultation with businesses and residents, we are currently shaping a three-year action plan to support the delivery of a town centre fit for the future.

“The plan outlines a vision to build on the town centres’ strengths and to achieve the opportunities ahead. Working together we can support our town centre as a better place to live, work and visit.

“The Book Nook project will not only help to make Spalding a more attractive place and encourage greater footfall but will also bring with it a sense of community spirit.

“This project has the potential to inspire the residents, workers and visitors of Spalding by learning about the life stories of the people of Spalding.”
This project is open to adults living in the Spalding area. Send in your memories and stories by February 7.

“Once the book nook has been displayed, participants will be able to take it home to add to their own bookshelf.”
