The Voice of Spalding and South Holland
The second round of Spalding and District Table Tennis League fixtures saw several players and teams put their names into the plus column.
In Division One, Bladerunners emphasised their title claims with a resounding 4-1 win over big rivals South Holland.
All the singles went to Colin Vertigan and Dave Gibson, but strangely they lost the doubles to the same pair of opponents.
Outsiders sit proudly at number two following a 3-2 win over Nets and Edges, another competitive pairing from last season.
Nets’ James Gibson scored both for his team, but in two of the other games Outsiders’ Keith Davey and Joe Beadle gave away a two-end lead before coming back.
Three teams are level behind them; South Holland, JDM and Jokers.
The latter pair met last week, with Sasha Martin taking two for Jokers, and ably supported by Guntars Briedes who scored one and helped with the doubles. Phil Chandler scored for JDM.
Mine’s a Pint notched up a first win in the top flight with a 3-2 victory over Aches and Pains, old rivals from last season as well. Jeremy Hitcham and Andrew Hay both took one of their singles and paired up for the deciding doubles, while Garry Wilkinson scored both the loser’s points.
In Division Two, MatDuf have been pushed off the top, but purely on alphabetical order. They did what they had to with a win over Casey’s Pingers.
In a hard match, only one game finished in three, with MatDuf’s Stewart Duffill taking two. Jonathan Matthews took one and they teamed up for the doubles, but Pingers’ James Coote picked up a first point of the season.
Hurricane Brothers are top after playing in two matches. They started by taking two off Chunky and Monkey Junior’s Dave Coley in a match brought forward, before defeating Skidlids 4-1. Sam and George Wallis dropped just the one game, a singles against Skid’s Richard Matthews, with George, in particular, in good form.
Dave Coley’s other match was also two games, this the scheduled match with Sons of Anarchy, winning one and losing the other to Adam Sokol.
Castle Sports find themselves sharing bottom spot with Pingers, after a 3-2 defeat to the junior pairing for Win for a Curry.
Dylan Taylor took two for Curry and was well supported by debutant Tom Chesworth. For the losers Ping Wang scored a first win in a tight game against Chesworth and paired with Rod Bain to take the doubles. Chesworth in turn had already got his first win.
