Band’s successful Learn to Play Week

Holbeach Town Band has just finished its 14th annual Learn to Play Week.

It was the most successful to date with 26 people of all ages going along to try out the wide range of instruments – cornet, tenor horn, baritone, euphonium, trombone and tuba.

Around 20 people went along each day and they were all able to produce notes on their first day.

As they progressed through the week, they were taught how to play the instruments and the basics of reading music and most were able to play simple tunes by the end of the week.

All the learners were invited to join the band’s Saturday morning learner group where they can continue to practise on the instrument of their choice. The band lends instruments to its members and encourages them to take them home to practice.

Musical director Mel Hopkin praised all the learners for their hard work and excellent progress during the week. He also thanked the members of the band for their help and support during the week.

He said: “The band provides these learner sessions and the instruments totally free of charge.

“Many of the town band’s current players came through the band’s structured training scheme.”

The band has worked hard to establish links with the community and encourage membership from all age groups and its efficiency and professionalism has ensured its growing reputation and popularity.
