Andy’s Anglesey podium spree secures top three finish in Caterham Championship

Spalding’s Andy Molsom is guaranteed a top three finish in the Caterham Graduates Championship after bagging another podium double.

The Molsom Associates Optometrists racer secured his 13th podium place from 14 races this year in the latest outing at Anglesey in North Wales.

He came second in the first race before claiming third spot in the second outing despite suffering overheated rear tyres.

Molsom commented: “Anglesey is an odd little circuit with some quite technical corners.

“Qualifying was a challenge with rain and gusting wind, but I had great fun finding grip on the slippery circuit.

“It was another good weekend though and keeps me in the hunt for the championship.

“I am guaranteed third place in the championship, even without attending the Spa race, as the final championship positions are determined by dropping the three worst results of the year.”

The Anglesey weather for qualifying was the usual mix of wind and rain, but the session went well for Molsom with two third place starts.

Saturday’s first race, which was also wet, saw a good start for Molsom who went straight into the lead after poor starts from championship contenders Benson and Briant.

At the end of the first lap, Briant slipped back due to an error, which left Benson and Molsom fighting for the lead of the race.

Despite losing ground through backmarkers, Molsom had again caught Benson by the end of the race.

Unfortunately the chequered flag was dropped before Molsom could make his way past Benson.

Having to settle for a solid second place, Molsom and Benson were an impressive 35 seconds ahead of the battle for third place with Molsom yet again setting the fastest lap of the race.

The second race saw Benson, Briant and Molsom resuming their normal battle for the lead.

Unfortunately, Molsom suffered overheating rear tyres in the now dry conditions, so slipped back a little from the lead, but still finished in third place.

The championship is now very tight at the top with only a few points between the three challengers.

With six race wins, it is Benson’s championship to lose now, but it is feasible for either Briant or Molsom to also win the title.

With Molsom’s excellent record this year in wet conditions, he is hoping for the usual wet October weather in Belgium when they arrive at Spa on October 8 and 9.

With a full grid of 65 Caterhams on arguably the best modern Formula 1 racetrack, it will be a spectacle both from inside the car and from the grandstands.
