GUNNING FOR GLORY: Spalding Town are hoping for more reasons to cheer over the next week.

Ambrose: Big week ahead for Spalding Town’s title and promotion aspirations

Rob Ambrose reckons that Spalding Town are entering a massive week in their quest for South Lincs and Border League Premier Division glory.

Town sat out last weekend’s action and saw their lead at the top cut to 22 points – while defending champions Market Deeping 2nd are now 31 points behind them with two games in hand.

Spalding play host to Woodhall Spa 2nd on Saturday (1.30pm), before visiting Deeping 2nd the following week.

Skipper Ambrose knows that two wins would put Town’s destiny in their own hands – and he’d back them to deliver the title and promotion back to the Lincs ECB Premier Division from there.

He said: “It was nice to have a weekend off in July, I’ve not been used to that over the past few years!

“I think we’re now approaching a big period. If we win on Saturday and results go our way, beating Deeping the following week would really put things in our own hands.

“I don’t mean to sound arrogant, but I wouldn’t bank on any of the other sides doing us a favour if we don’t beat Deeping.

“That sounds like I’m looking past Woodhall Spa. I’m not, but I do expect us to take maximum points from Saturday’s game.

“They’ve been hit a little by the first team calling up a few of their better players – and you can see that their results haven’t been as good as in recent years.”

Ambrose is hoping to have a full strength squad at his disposal on Saturday.

That could include Tim Norris, who scored an impressive century for Spalding 2nd last weekend. The Town skipper is acutely aware that the 2nd side have a big game against

Freiston, so admits that he may shuffle his pack accordingly.

Either way, he was impressed with Norris’ knock – and hopes other players will follow his example.

Ambrose added: “Tim has done what I’d expect anyone to do – he’s dropped down to the second side and made a point by scoring a ton.

“I can’t ignore that kind of performance and he’s in line to play for the first team.

“Any player that impresses for the seconds has every chance of being called up to play for the first team. They are doing superbly well – and this weekend is also a big one for them, so we’ll have to talk about selection.”
