All Hale-Smith after massive medal win

James Hale-Smith was the winner of Tydd St Giles Golf Club’s biggest ever Spring Medal.

Hale-Smith saw off the challenge of 152 other golfers from the region to take the title by a massive eight points.

Second on count back was Mike Lewarne with 37 points just ahead of Long Sutton’s Leigh Chapman.

Gavin Merrison was fourth, also on 37 points with Michael Flint fifth a point further back.

There were division wins for Dean Wright (Division One) and Ray Skeels (Division Two) both with 36 points.

Dean won Division One on countback from Robert Simpson, who claimed second, third-placed Scott Williams and fourth place Kerr Page. Tom Brooks was a place and point further back.

It wasn’t quite as close in Division Two with Skeels two points clear of John Northrop and David Holmes the latter taking second on countback.

That also decided the difference between fourth placed David Barres and fifth placed David Smith who both collated 33 points.

On the three nearest the pin competitions, Matt Prudence (fourth hole), Dave Longstaff-Hogg (eighth), Leigh

Chapman (11th), Mike Lewarne (16th) and Kerr Page (18th) picked up accolades as did Kevin Goode for the longest drive on the 13th.

Men’s club captain Vinney Day thanked all for taking part making a great competition played in glorious sunshine.

He also gave a special thanks to the green keepers, the team working tirelessly to get the course in excellent condition after a very prolonged wet spring.
