Age UK branch needs your help

Could you join a team that helps some of the most vulnerable elderly people in South Holland every week?

Age UK does fantastic work in the town, but they need more help to ensure as many people as possible who
use their services are able to access them.

Around 45 volunteers in the Spalding and District branch help to bus people to the day centre or maintain the charity’s furniture shops in Pinchbeck and Holbeach.

But more are needed, particularly to help people to get to the day centre and in the shops themselves.

General manager Liz Walmsley, said: “We’re not too bad with regards to volunteers at the day centre and for those who drive them there, but we need more people to help those drivers and to help out in the shops.

“We need people to help escort the drivers who ensure that everyone has their seatbelt on and the doors are locked.

“We do quite well with volunteers, we wouldn’t be able to provide the services we do.”

The day centre helps bring together pensioners every day for games and events when otherwise they would be left on their own.

The furniture store helps fund the endeavours that have such a huge impact on the lives of the area’s most elderly.

Driving escorts would be needed for around 90 minutes in the morning or afternoon when pensioners are collected.

Shifts in the furniture shop are either 9.30am to 12.30pm to 12.30pm to 3pm.

Liz says of volunteering: “A lot of the volunteers have been here a number of years.

“It’s about giving something back in a service you may need yourself in the future and volunteers get a lot out of helping those that need it.”
