A16 junctions to be widened and cycle lanes installed outside of Springfields after £20m government funding confirmed

Three junctions in Spalding are set for works in the next three years after a bid for £20m of government funding was successful.

The A16 junction with Wardentree Industrial Estate Measures and the McDonald’s roundabout are set to be widened and have more lanes, while cycle lanes and a pedestrian crossing are to be put in place at the junction outside Springfields.

Further north, other A16 junctions to be improved with the money include the Station Road junction at Kirton and the Marsh Lane roundabout in Boston.

Lincolnshire County Council has been awarded the money as part of the government’s Levelling Up fund with other funding allocated in Lincolnshire being £10m towards a new cinema in Gainsborough and it has to be spent by 2024.

Coun Richard Davies, the authority’s executive member for highways, said: “This announcement is fantastic news for Lincolnshire, and we very much welcome the government’s commitment to ensuring every part of the country gets the funding it needs.

“Now that our bid’s been confirmed, the next step is to complete detailed feasibility studies for each of the improvement projects we included. Once these are complete early next year, the studies will outline the costs, risks and general design requirements for each set of works. From there, we’ll move into the detailed design phase, with a view to having the money awarded to us spent by the end of 2024 – the timeframe specified by government.”

The proposed work incldues widening the roads around the B1180 junction which is the entrance fromt he A16 to Wardentree.

A two-way segregated cycle track is to be built on the east side of Camel Gate and a signalised crossing installed to “improve connections to the Springfield Outlet area”, Lincolnshire County Council say.

The A16 roundabout nearby will also be widened to add circulatory lanes.

A footbridge over the A16 had previously been mooted, but the county council’s outline for works now only says the work will entail “the enhancement of the crossing facilities”

Coun Davies continued: “Not only will improving the A16 corridor benefit residents by way of better walking and cycling facilities and reduced traffic congestion, but it will also open up the area for further investment opportunities.

“Investing more into improved transport infrastructure is a priority for Greater Lincolnshire, and these works will complement other local transport and renewal projects underway or planned throughout the county.”
