A Manton masterclass

An 84 from skipper Jon Manton helped Spalding Town to a win over Grimsby Town in the Lincolnshire Premier Division.

He helped pace the chase to 201 superbly for a seven- wicket home win on Saturday.
On winning the toss Manton opted to bowl and after an opening partnership he was rewarded with two quick wickets from Nilantha Atapattu.
Toby Blake patiently made his way to 3 from 29 balls before he was trapped in front while Dennis Buirman went for five from six balls caught by Neo Timothy.
Opener Neal Snell hit 50 but was then bowled by Mitch Freeman (3 for 41). It sparked Grimsby slipping from 121 for 3 to 154 for 7 with Will Gardner taking 2 for 21 from 10 in a fine spell.
Josh Lawrence (1 for 54) also struck with the score on 177 but the visitors’ tail was able to get them to 200 at the end of their 50 overs.
Spalding took 42 overs to chase it down having been set on their way by an opening partnership of 83 between Manton and Freeman.
The latter was out caught for 36 but Ethan Larence joined his skipper in another half century partnership.
The pair put on 64 before Manton was trapped LBW with the score on 147. His 84 came from 115 balls and contained 13 fours.
Ollie Dring (9) came and went but Chris Dring hit 23 not out in 19 balls to see his side home alongside Lawrence’s 27 not out.
The win saw seventh placed Spalding move closer to Grimsby in sixth in the table.
They face the long trip to Scunthorpe on Saturday.
Spalding 3rd XI picked up their first win of the season as they beat Ketton 2nd by eight wickets in the South Lincs and Border League Division Two.
Ketton batted first and posted 156 all out in their 38.4 overs.
Spalding reached 161 for 2 in just 31 overs.
