TREBLE: Matt Cawthorn.

Hat-trick hero Cawthorn praises his players

Long Sutton player-boss Matt Cawthorn heaped praise on his players after they recorded their first Peterborough League Division One victory of the season on Saturday.
Cawthorn cracked home a hat-trick as the Magpies defeated Riverside 5-1 to register their first three-point haul from eight league outings.
He enthused: “Personally I was pleased to score a hat-trick, but it was even more pleasing for us all to get that monkey off our backs and get that first league win.
“I must say that the attitude and application of the lads has been tremendous.
“They have stuck with it because our performances haven’t matched the results. We’ve plugged away and are finally seeing some positive results.”
Sutton settled well on Saturday and raced into a two-goal lead after producing some fine flowing football.
Cawthorn opened the scoring after a visiting defender attempted to clear and the ball cannoned off the Magpies frontman and into the net.
Matty Oliver then raced clear to double Sutton’s lead, but the hosts eased off and let Riverside back into the contest by conceding a sloppy goal just before half-time.
Sutton responded well to the setback after the break and Cawthorn added a brace to complete his hat-trick haul, with Sam Moses also on target.
Cawthorn added: “I knew after a poor start to the league we had to go on a little run and pull ourselves to somewhere near where this squad should be.
“It’s three games unbeaten now, but we’ll just look to our next game against Whittlesey Reserves on Saturday and hopefully we’ll pick another win up, although I will be taking nothing for granted.”
Magpies: Taylor, Ramm, Melton, Brandon, Bennett, M Oliver, Narducci, Radeloff, W Oliver, Moses, Cawthorn. Subs used: Allen, Punter, Wayman, Treacher. Match ball sponsor: Peter Warner (Orchard Nurseries).
Long Sutton Reserves saw their unbeaten start to the Peterborough League Division Four campaign ended by a 3-1 defeat to title favourites Premiair.
The Peterborough-based side have averaged nine goals a game in their opening three victories while only conceding one.
Sutton, who played with a defensive formation, did stun their hosts by opening the scoring before Premiair hit back with three unanswered strikes.
Manager Grant Varnham said: “We knew from their opening games that Premiair were going to prove a tough match but we set up for that.
“My boys gave it their all and bought in to the tactics, but there are games in football where you have to admit that the opposition on the day deserved the win.”
Tom Grantham had put Sutton ahead with his first goal of the season, showing a typical striker’s poaching instinct after some tidy wing play.
The lead only lasted ten minutes as Premiair earned themselves a penalty five minutes before half-time which was despatched.
The home team came out strongly in the second half with two unanswered goals coming from good wing play down the left.
