Toynton to leave role as Spalding United chairman as new consortium closes in

Chris Toynton is to step down as chairman of Spalding United and has resigned from the club’s board of directors.

The long-serving supremo, who has been associated with the Tulips for 13 years, has agreed a deal to leave his role following the formation of a new consortium, which will assume control at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field.

Club president Graham Chappell has also tendered his resignation from Spalding’s board of directors.

Toynton will take a new role of vice president, with Chappell retaining his position as club president.

It is expected that the identity of the new consortium will be revealed at a press conference next week.

There are still plenty of formalities to be completed before the change of control at the Sir Halley can be completed, but the Tulips have already issued a club statement that confirms Toynton’s imminent departure.

Here’s the official club statement in full…

A new-look board of directors will be at the head of operations to take Spalding United Football Club into a new Evo-Stik Northern Premier League season.

After 13 seasons’ involvement with the club, firstly as main sponsor and then chairman, Chris Toynton has made a decision to step down from office following the formation of a consortium of investors, who have tabled a proposal and plan to take the club forward – once all formalities with the Football Association have been completed.

Mr Toynton and Mr Graham Chappell will resign as directors of the club, with Mr Toynton becoming a Vice President and Mr Chappell continuing as club President.

Mr Toynton said: “This is great news for the club, with a new regime to go onwards and upwards to a new level following our tremendous success of the last three seasons.”

Further announcements will be made once all formalities are completed.
