Rawlinson eyes FA Cup cash boost ahead of Spalding United’s ‘ding-dong’ Wisbech Town derby

Spalding United boss Chris Rawlinson is looking forward to a “ding-dong” FA Cup clash at Wisbech Town on Saturday (3pm).

The Tulips, who have won both of their Evo-Stik NPL First Division South games so far this season, are favourites to win the clash with UCL Premier Division outfit Wisbech at the Elgoods Stadium.

Rawlinson admits that his side are looking forward to the clash with the Fenmen, who are managed by ex-Spalding chief Dick Creasey and have former Tulips Josh Ford, Jamie Stevens and Jon Fairweather amongst their ranks.

But the Tulips supremo insists that bringing in vital prize money – the victors will net £1,925 in prize funding – would make a “massive difference” to the club.

Rawlinson said: “It’ll be a ding-dong local derby. There’s lots of ex-Tulips in their team and players that are friends with our lads.

“I say bring it on, it’s a huge game for the club.

“The club doesn’t fund itself, it relies on a lot of volunteers who work very hard.

“A good run in the FA Cup, even a round or two, makes a massive financial difference.”

Wisbech are second the UCL Premier Division and won their last match 9-1 at home to Sleaford Town.

But they have lost two of their four games so far, including back-to-back defeats against Deeping Rangers and Desborough Town.
